Remembering 9/11

The terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, 2001 changed the nation and altered the course of events in the United States and around the world.  Most of you may be too young to truly remember that day: where you were, what you were doing, how you felt, and how it affected you.  Thus, what I would like you to do is facilitate a discussion regarding 9/11 with someone who does remember (i.e. your parents, an older sibling, an aunt or uncle, or a family friend etc.).  Ask them the following questions:
  • Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?
  • How did you feel?
  • What was your immediate reaction?
  • Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
  • In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
After you have had this discussion, report back with your findings by responding to this blog post.  You have until Wednesday, September 14th to complete this assignment.

I asked my mom and step dad, Rick, about 9/11. Rick was at work and heard it on the radio. He had no idea what was going on. His reaction was to call my mom to find out. My mom was drying her hair when Rick called. He asked her if she had the news on and what was going on. My mom then turned on the news to watch 9/11. She said she couldn't believe what was happening and that it did not seem real. Rick was working midnights, so he went to work eleven the night before. When he came home the next morning he stayed up all day glued to the TV. They said America's security has changed the most. People will always remember that day and always be scared that something like that could happen again. Tighter security in airports was a big change. They added numerous rules and restrictions to get on a plane. After 9/11 America will never be the way it was before. Many lives have been lost and scarred by 9/11.

I asked my mom what she remembered about 9/11, and she told me that she was at her orthodontic office working on patients when a teenage patient asked her if she had heard that the World Trade Center was hit by a plane. At first she thought it was a hoax but then when he told her he was for sure she told her co-workers, they turned on the news and listened to the live broadcast for the rest of the day. She remembers the day being cool and the skies being really blue, it was a quiet day. Everywhere you went people were listening and watching the news. She thinks that people seem more patriotic and it has changed our security levels, especially at the airports.

When I asked my mother where she was and what she was doing on 9/11, she told me that she was at home watching the "Today Show" on the television when she found out about the attacks. She told me that she saw the second airplane hit the second tower.

When I asked her how she felt that day and what her immediate reaction was, she told me she was shocked. Then she said that she stood there watching the television in disbelief for a long time. When people started to jump out of the windows a sense of grief and dread overcame her. She went on to tell me when the first tower collapsed she started to weep and decided she was going to go get my siblings from school because she wanted us all to be together.

When I asked my mother if there was anything in particular that stood out to her, she told me that she spent four hours trying to get a hold of my father. He was busy at the time in a business meeting. My older siblings and my mother went and got black cloth and draped it over our subdivision's entrance sign. Our neighbors came over crying.

When I asked my mother about what changes have happened in America and in the World in the past 10 years because of 9/11, she told me that the most obvious change was in national security. Another change would be the amount of American flags you see displayed. Patriotism has risen greatly since 9/11 and we will never forget what happened that day.
